Starcraft 2 – 5 million copies on launch day? Totally!

GTA IV sold 3.8 million copies on launch day and it established itself as the best selling video game in history. But then in November 2009 came Modern Warfare 2 and mopped the floor with it, selling an outrageous 4.7 million copies on launch day in USA and UK alone. That's $310 million dollars in just 24 hours. Hard to beat, don't you think?

But, if there's anyone out there who can surpass this achievements, it's gotta be Blizzard. I'm not trying to flame on Infinity Ward's game, even though it was a silly remake with almost zero improvements, I'm just aware of the facts:

- Starcraft 2 already has over one million beta players. Not everyone got a key, so it would have had a lot more if it was an open for all beta.

- We only waited Modern Warfare 2 for 2 years. Starcraft 2 comes after 12 years of waiting, so the hype surrounding it has reached critical levels

- The first Starcraft is still being played around the world and it even got to be South Korea's national sport. It sold 11 million copies world wide since 1998 and the players are eager to get their hands on a shiny new sequel. Actually, there already were Starcraft 2 competitions in the beta version!

- On the 17th of July there was a total of 700,000 preorders in North America alone and over 2 million world wide

All these ingredients indicate that we're in the the biggest launch in history. The target is 4.8 million copies, but I say it's going to be least 5 million. Only one more day of waiting and we'll know the answer.

  1. Well, we’ll have to wait for the reviews to start coming in to see if all of the hype is really justified. If the reviews are good, however, I think that the sales will really start to explode.

  2. I think it will definitely explode on the market. I know lots of people who are geared up for it regardless of the reviews. Think I’ll wait and see though!

  3. GTA IV is not the best selling game of all time you shitheel.

  4. Look closer, you might see my point there.

  5. Most of my friends are really psyched. I’m sure it’ll be as big as you say.

  6. Well, no, actually. You’re going to have to wait for the official sales results which we won’t know the day the game comes out.

  7. interesting i agree there is no reason that starcraft 2 should sell poorly blizzard has systematicly removed typical PC weakness while improving on an already great franchise. you dont even need a powerful gaming rig to play it. i think regardless of reviews this will be the best selling game of the year

  8. And I will be a proud member of that 5 million.

  9. Didn’t Halo 3 have 4 million preorders or something? I thought that was the biggest.

  10. @fishing organizations:

you must be kidding. People don’t need reviews for blizzard games.

  11. While I agree that Modern Warfare 2 is a joke and that the only people who buy it are (alleged) gamers who aren’t coordinated enough to play better games like Killzone 2, Resistance 2, and Halo, I do not agree that StarCraft 2 will have the biggest launch in the history of gaming. 700,000 preorders in the US alone is actually not even close to being enough to beat Modern Warfare 2′s record. Halo: Reach, which still has 2 months til launch, already has 650,000 preorders in the US alone. So you’re estimate of 5 million copies is off by a mile. It will be closer to 3.5 million (FACT).

  12. If starcraft was on consoles the sales would have met the targets you set…….. It will be big but not that big in my opinion

  13. You made some good points there. I did a search about the topic and hardly found any specific details on other websites, but then great to be here, seriously, thanks.
